A message from our Youth Representative, Philippa Osei

Posted on Monday, January 11, 2021

Hi, I am Philippa, the Youth Rep for Thames North Synod. This means I represent our synod on a national level by communicating the ideas of young people and pushing forward agendas that benefit them. An important part of the role is to advocate for the youth and make sure our valuable ideas are represented within the Church as a whole. Other important aspects of the role include:

  • Being an active participant of URC Youth - this is the umbrella title for all children, young people and young adults who are connected with the URC and fall into the 11 to 25 age bracket.
  • Sitting on Youth Executive - here representatives from each synod meet every 3 months to discuss the issues and changes that have occurred within their synod. Also, to fulfil some of the resolutions from Youth Assembly by forming task groups to tackle the topics.
  • Planning Youth Assembly – an annual event bringing together a diverse group of under-25s from across Scotland, England and Wales, for a weekend of business and fun combined, exploring issues and topics relevant to Church, society and life. This happens through workshops, seminars, discussions and creative activity.
  • Working alongside our CYDO (Children & Youth Development Officer).

A Little About Me

I grew-up and still attend Grange Park URC in Leyton. Currently, I assist with leading the young people on Sundays, Here I have been able to increase the verbal participation of the group, by helping to facilitate a safe space for all opinions and encouraging them to be confident in expressing their thoughts.

Understanding the need for set standards and practises within the church, at Grange Park, I formed part of the constitution committee to review and update the churches constitution to help with the governance issues of the church.

Outside of church, I attend sixth form and study Biology, Chemistry and Maths. I also have a passion for music and play 2 instruments, the piano and violin.

I am passionate about being a part of the ever-evolving face of the URC and am ready to step into a position of responsibility where I can fight for inclusion and progressive changes centred around God.

OUR VOICES MATTER! If any young person has a topic or suggestion that they would like to be put forward in the youth executive meeting or to me and our CYDO, feel free to contact me via email: [email protected]
