The day was one of fun and celebration along with reflection and challenge.
All Aboard! – October 15th 2016
Over 80 people, Pilots, children, young people and leaders from Thames North Synod, gathered at The Vine church on October 15th 2016 to celebrate 80 years of Pilots. Everyone became a Pilot for the day.
The theme for the day was Chosen by God – young and old.
Pilots was founded in 1936 by the then London Missionary Society as a way of thanking children & young people for their part in raising money for boats for the continuing mission work in the South Pacific, work started by John Williams back in 1816.
John Williams was a young teenager in Tottenham, when he felt called by God. Responding to the Call, by pestering the London Missionary Society to let him work for them, he finally succeeded and left Britain for the islands of the South Seas, arriving in Tahiti in Nov 1817.
Pilots spent the morning ‘Island Hopping’. They visited different islands which would have been known to John and his family. Islands such as Tahiti, Raratonga, Raiatea Samoa and Erromonga. Here on these ‘islands’ they engaged in an activities ranging from Craft, Dance, Music, Thinking, Food and Games. Time allowed for 2 island to be visited, plus making their own lunch on the Food Island.
Having assembled and eaten their lunch, the afternoon started with them hearing how God called Abraham, an old man. Having heard the Bible’s account of this call, skilfully told by the Revd Ulrike Bell, Pilots engaged in a series of ‘Interpretation Workshops’ where they re-told the story through the mediums of Art, Drama, Creative Writing and Breaking News.
The end results of these workshops was shared in a Showcase before all joined in worship with songs and sharing prayers, giving thanks for the day and for such inspirational characters as Abraham and John Williams.
It being a party – all left with a “goodie” bag which included a model boat to make, a Pilots 80th birthday balloon, an 80th birthday badge, a Pilots “pop-up” Frisbee and a piece of birthday cake!
A true celebration and a thoroughly good day.

Pilots Promotional Video
We are very excited to present a short film that has been made to promote the Pilots organisation. The film is 3-4 minutes long and gives a flavour of what Pilots is all about, what children and young people gain from belonging to Pilots and how all involved can grow and flourish in a safe and loving environment.
Pilots 80th Anniversary
I expect many of you are aware that 2016 is the 80th anniversary of Pilots! Pilots has produced a special 80th anniversary logo and there are plans to celebrate this occasion within the Synod later in the year. Janet Lees has been asked to write an 80th birthday song and that is underway.
As well as capturing present Pilots Companies celebrations in word and picture, we are also asking people to submit reminiscences of events in the recent or distant past for publication in the Autumn edition of Bridge.
We hope that this will inspire everyone to celebrate what has gone before and look forward to another 80 years of fun, learning and worship.
